BAY AREA — A heat wave is expected to sweep through the Bay Area this week and give many residents a taste of summer in May.

Temperatures are expected to exceed 90 degrees in most of the South Bay, North Bay and East Bay on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to AccuWeather.

The East Bay and North Bay are expected to see the highest temperatures, with mid-to-upper 90s possible in Livermore, Concord and Napa. The South Bay is expected to see mid-90s, with Gilroy projected to reach 98 degrees on Tuesday.

Areas near the bayside and coast are expected to be much cooler with onshore flow keeping temperatures down. The Peninsula is expected to reach the mid-to-upper 80s on Tuesday and Wednesday, with areas like Pacifica not even hitting 70 degrees. Santa Cruz is projected to reach the mid-80s on Tuesday before dipping to the 70s on Wednesday.

The National Weather Service put in place a “moderate” weather risk for significant heat conditions for inland areas, mostly in the East Bay. The NWS urged people to limit strenuous outdoor activities, never leave children or pets in vehicles and drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.

The high temperatures, combined with low humidity and windy conditions could present an increased fire danger, according to the National Weather Service. NWS put the risk of wildfire at “minor” for this week, but noted that the risk could increase.

The heat wave comes on the heels of two area fires that firefighters just got the upper hand on. The Quail Fire near Vacaville has burned 135 acres and was 95 percent contained as of Monday morning, while the Owens Fire in Mendocino County burned 36 acres and was fully contained Monday.

Temperatures are expected to cool down across the board later this week, with only high 70s projected for this weekend.
