Huge Parade Crowds Show Gilroy's Small-Town Spirit
Enthusiastic crowds gave a resounding welcome to the many veterans in Gilroy's Memorial Day Parade.
While it has the fastest-growing population in the county, Gilroy proved that it has held on to its small-town attitude with the shoulder-to-shoulder crowds who went out to enjoy the sun and the 2011 Memorial Day parade.
“These are our veterans … and how do we salute them?” asked parade announcer, Mike Sanchez, summoning loud cheers from the crowd. Each time a veteran's name was announced, the crowd waved and cheered.
The two-hour procession featured veterans, local organizations and familiar faces, with classic aircraft containing active-duty personnel flying in formation over the march down Tenth Street.
