No Gilroy Taxpayer Money To Be Spent On Potential Hockey Rink
Gilroy City Administrator Jimmy Forbis took several questions on the potential partnership with the San Jose Sharks during a town hall.
GILROY, CA — Gilroy City Administrator Jimmy Forbis discussed several community issues in a town hall last month, including noise ordinances, a potential partnership with the San Jose Sharks for a hockey rink and crime statistics.
Forbis took around 25 questions from residents who took part in the Feb. 24 town hall.
On the proposed hockey rink, Forbis confirmed the city would not be using taxpayer money or seeking a bond or tax measure on the ballot to support the rink.

“We would not propose a project that would require a general obligation bond,” Forbis said.
“Any facility that would be proposed would be paid for by the revenue that was generated by that facility.”

The proposed facility would consist of two ice rinks, with the possibility of a swimming or recreational facility, according to the city. The Gilroy Dispatch reported last year that the facility would be 100,000 square feet and also include a restaurant, with an estimated cost of $40 million.
