Gilroy Police Fatally Shoot Man Downtown Near Post Office

Officers returned fire after a man shot at them with a handgun, according to the Gilroy Police Department.

GILROY, CA — Gilroy police fatally shot a man who fired at officers near the post office downtown on Fourth Street early Wednesday morning.

Police responded to a report of an intoxicated male around 2:30 a.m at a business on the 100 block of Fourth Street. The man, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin, shot at the officers with a handgun "within seconds" of officers arriving, according to Gilroy police.

Officers returned fire and the man sustained at least one gunshot wound. He was given emergency medical aid at the scene but died after being transported to a local trauma center.

The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol responded to the scene. The officers on scene were not injured.

The Gilroy Police Department’s Investigations Bureau and Internal Affairs and the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office are each independently and concurrently investigating the incident.

Police asked the public to avoid the area early Wednesday morning, and access to the post office on Fourth Street was blocked off.
