Report Says Former Gilroy Resident May Have Joined ISIS

A national news television network is reporting that a former Gilroy resident may have joined ISIS.

GILROY - A national news television network is reporting that a former Gilroy resident has left the country and may have joined ISIS.

According to NBC News, Alberto Renteria grew up in Gilroy in a Catholic family, but stopped going to church and adopted Islam several years ago.

His family told the network Renteria attended two local high schools and worked for a computer firm in San Jose at one time.

The report says Renteria attended services at the South Valley Islamic Center in San Martin, but stopped showing up two or three years ago.

According to ISIS documents uncovered by NBC News, Renteria entered Syria at Tel Abyad in March 2014, when he was 24.

His whereabouts since then are unclear, according to the report.
