GILROY, CA — On a day when the city was out planting trees for their Arbor Day celebration, police reported a medium-sized tree "was maliciously cut down" on the southeast side of Los Arroyos Park in Gilroy.

It was believed to have happened between Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon, police said on its Facebook page.

The "pinkdawnchitapla" tree planted in 2005, which is valued at about $1,000, bordered Moro Drive behind the Go Kids Daycare facility.

The suspected vandal is facing a felony charge if convicted and will answer to both a city ordinance and criminal violation.

City Parks Supervisor Bill Headley noticed the unusual irony in the tree-cutting. Headley said it's been at least 15 years since the city has experienced a tree being cut down "as far as we know," he pointed out.
