WANTED: San Martin Man Sought For Gilroy Stabbing

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Roberto Mendoza, 33. He is considered armed and dangerous, Gilroy police say.

GILROY, CA — The Gilroy Police Department has obtained an arrest warrant for a San Martin resident they believe is responsible for a stabbing that happened on Thursday evening. At 6:45 p.m. Thursday, officers were dispatched to the 300 block of Ioof Avenue for a report of a man who was bleeding, police said. When officers arrived, no one was located. A "moderate amount" of fresh blood was found on part of the street and was later identified as the crime scene, police said.

A few minutes later, police received a call from Saint Louise Regional Hospital that a stabbing victim had just walked into their emergency room, police said.

The victim suffered numerous wounds to his upper body and was stabilized by hospital staff, then was later transported to a trauma center.

Officers said that as a result of their preliminary investigation, using witness statements and surveillance footage, they identified 33-year-old Roberto Mendoza as the suspect.

Detectives consider Mendoza, who has a warrant out for his alleged attempted homicide and assault with a deadly weapon, to be armed and dangerous.

The stabbing took place in front of South Valley Middle School but had no affiliation was the school itself or any activities affiliated with the educational facility.
