First Graduating AVID Class Recognized By School District

25 graduating AVID students spent their high school careers preparing for college. Now they're headed to begin a new chapter in their academic careers.

At Monday’s school board meeting, 25 senior students were honored for being the first graduating AVID class in the history of Glendora High School.

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, an international program that prepares students who find themselves in the academic “middle” for college eligibility and college success.

AVID students are expected to enroll in rigorous courses and the AVID elective provides the academic and organizational skills to succeed in these courses. College tutors provide additional support in the AVID elective class twice a week.

The AVID seniors traveled to colleges, including one trip to the east coast visiting colleges such as Harvard, Cornell and Boston University.  Another trip included colleges such as Stanford and the University of San Francisco.

According to district numbers, 96 percent of the Glendora AVID seniors have been accepted into at least one four-year university, and most of them have scholarships attached to their acceptance.

Greg Nakata, the AVID elective teacher and site coordinator, thanked both the board for their support and the Foundation for Glendora Unified Schools for their financial backing.

Board members commended the AVID students for their commitment to their studies and for setting a high standard for future AVID students to follow.
