Every town has its traditions. Check out these fun facts about what makes Half Moon Bay so special.

Half Moon Bay is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Half Moon Bay has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.
A few things to know:
- Half Moon Bay was once a prominent shipping port during the mid-19th century, exporting timber and produce. Today, you can still see remnants of this history at the Johnston House, a Victorian mansion turned museum showcasing the city's past.
- The Mavericks, some of the most dangerous and massive waves in the world, can be found just off the coast of Half Moon Bay. Every year, the world's top big wave surfers flock to the city to compete in the Mavericks Challenge.
- Half Moon Bay is home to a vibrant art scene, featuring galleries such as the Coastal Arts League and Coastal Repertory Theatre. You can catch live theater performances or browse local artists' work at these venues.
- One of the city's most beloved events is the Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival, held annually in October. This two-day festival boasts pumpkin-carving contests, live music and plenty of food and drink vendors.
- The Miramar Beach Restaurant is a Half Moon Bay institution that's been serving up fresh seafood and stunning ocean views since 1927. The restaurant was once a speakeasy during Prohibition and has hosted celebrities like Shirley Temple and Clark Gable.
- Half Moon Bay is a prime location for bird watching, with over 200 bird species having been spotted in the area. For the best birding opportunities, head to the nearby reserves: Pescadero Marsh Natural Preserve or the Ano Nuevo State Reserve.
- Half Moon Bay is home to several excellent wineries, including La Nebbia Winery, Barterra Winery and Half Moon Bay Winery. You can take a tour of these wineries and taste some of the delicious wines they produce.
- The city has a rich agricultural history, and you can still get a taste of that history by visiting one of the many farms and ranches in the area. Places like Lemos Farm and Pastorino Farms offer farm tours, pumpkin patches and other family-friendly activities.
- Half Moon Bay is a great place for outdoor recreation, with plenty of hiking and biking trails to explore. For a scenic hike, head to the Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve, where you can hike through a beautiful redwood forest and enjoy stunning views of the coast.
- The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay is a luxury resort that offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and has a world-renowned golf course.
- Half Moon Bay has a thriving agriculture community, with over 20 local farms that sell their produce at the city's farmers market. The farmers market takes place every Saturday morning and is a great place to stock up on fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables.
- If you're a golf enthusiast, you'll be pleased to know that Half Moon Bay has two championship golf courses: the Ocean Course and the Old Course. Both courses offer stunning ocean views and are ranked among the best golf courses in the country.
- The Half Moon Bay Brewing Company is a popular local spot that serves up craft beer and delicious pub fare. The brewery is located right on the harbor and has a great outdoor patio with fire pits and ocean views.
