Here are the top 3 stories today in Healdsburg:
- Yet another storm blew in last night and is unleashing on Healdsburg and environs as we speak. PG&E says it's the 15th of the year so far — but "who's counting?" asks the National Weather Service. It will bring "gusty winds, moderate to heavy rain and mountain snow" through tomorrow, PG&E officials say, adding: "This year’s storm window is historic and unprecedented and remains open despite the arrival of spring." More from the Press Democrat: "Gusts up to 50 mph are possible with the storm, along with 3 inches of rain and potential thunderstorms. ... There is a marginal chance for thunder and lightning Tuesday and up to a 20% chance Wednesday. The probability for thunderstorms is higher along the coast. The storm is expected to move out of the region Wednesday night into Thursday morning, with some potential isolated showers lingering by Thursday afternoon, Canepa said. 'It’s at least moderate to high confidence that it will continue to be showery, wet, unsettled, cold, chilly with a possibility of a thunderstorm or two Wednesday,' he said." Try to stay safe and dry out there, everybody! (National Weather Service via Facebook & Nextdoor & Press Democrat; paywall)
- The City of Healdsburg's e-bike program, launched last year by the scooter and bike share company Bird, is reportedly back in action after some eyebrow-raising stops and starts. In January, the city announced Bird was pausing the program and rounding up the bikes for the time being — possibly due to a personnel issue within the Bird company. At the time, city officials reassured residents the program would be back soon. And now it is! "Bikeshare e-bikes are built to conveniently cover trips of three to five miles in comfort, and help contribute to cleaner air — and less traffic," officials say. "Head to work, run a few errands, or just go for a weekend ride! Download the app, sign up, choose your payment method, unlock the bike — and start riding. Bikes are equipped with GPS, and can be located on the app's map. Pick one up from where it's perched, and then leave it wherever your destination may be — just make sure it's not blocking the public right-of-way." They ask that anyone who sees a "bike that has migrated to a location that’s ruffling feathers" to "please contact Bird Customer Service at 1 (866) 205-2442 so they can work to relocate the bike." You can download the app and try it out here. (Healdsburg Patch & Go.bird.co & City of Healdsburg)
- It's almost Healdsburg Farmers Market time again! The market's 2023 season begins in mid-April and runs all the way through December, organizers say in a press release. The Saturday version of the market will be held from 8:30 a.m. through noon, starting April 15 and ending Dec. 23, in that big parking lot just west of the plaza. And the Tuesday market will be held on the plaza itself from 9 a.m. through 12:30 p.m., starting May 16 and ending Sept. 26. "This season we welcome some new farms, food producers and craftspeople to our midst, as well as our tried-and-true vendors, some of whom have been with the market since its start" in 1978, they say. "We also feature live music by some of our most talented local musicians and singers, cooking demos, and market tours, and fun events, like the Zucchini and Pumpkin Festivals, making a shopping trip much more of a joyful, lively experience than wheeling a cart through your local grocery store." Also! Organizers are looking to hire an official "market ambassador" this season, to help "promote and build our farmers' market" for $20 an hour. Check out their Facebook page for more info. - The North Bay Business Journal has some more juicy details on Healdsburg Lumber's big move across the river next month. The lumber company's new 43,000-square-foot home at 359 Hudson St. is a "third larger" than their old one, the paper says. More from the story: "This structure is 99% complete as workers install multilevel display racks and stock shelves in spacious two-story showrooms. ... The new building will also be the new home for HLC’s Hudson Street Design, a store embedded within a store showcasing a curated selection of doors, windows, window coverings, skylights, as well as finished and cabinet hardware, plumbing fixtures and bath/kitchen configurations arranged in homestyle model showrooms." (North Bay Business Journal; paywall)
- In case you didn't hear, there was a full shutdown of the southbound 101 down in Petaluma, due to a big mudslide over the weekend. County officials said crews were working through Sunday afternoon on "gas lines that pass under the freeway and building a temporary bypass to avoid the landslide area in Marin County near Redwood Boulevard and Buck Center Drive." (County of Sonoma via Facebook)
- In a letter to the editor submitted to the Patch, Healdsburg resident Stanley Crane questions why so much water is being released from Lake Sonoma. (Healdsburg Patch)
