Here are the top 3 stories today in Healdsburg:

  1. It's official: Healdsburg is getting a new champagne lounge, opening as soon as "early next year." City officials gave their blessing last week to owner Sarah Quider, the woman with the champagne dreams. Her business will be housed inside the little Victorian building at 134 North St., which is "tacked on to a 1900-era residence" that she plans to open as an Airbnb. The building is sandwiched between Valette and that long red office building that SingleThread's owners just bought (along with the Raven Film Center) to expand their "hospitality experiences" in town. More on Sarah's vision for the bar, via the Healdsburg Tribune: "Promising a diverse selection of sparkling wines, including some affordable quaffs for the casual imbiber, applicant Quider made her pitch to the commission for the Healdsburg Bubble Bar. 'I want it to be a special place for Healdsburg, for residents and tourists to come in and to celebrate,' she told the [planning] commission. 'Weddings, retirement, a new job, a Wednesday, whatever they would like to come and just celebrate.' ... She told the commission she envisions a 'French bistro' styling for the otherwise neutral street-side space, most previously occupied by Licoco’s offices, whose tasting room remains on Matheson. According to the application, the bar will be open six days per week, from 11am to 6pm (closed on Tuesdays). Interior improvements within the building will include a new bar with four seats, a lounge area with 10 seats and an outdoor patio with six seats. The concrete landing outside the front door will be remodeled and fenced, to allow for extra outdoor socializing." Read the full story in the Trib for more on Sarah's background and some pushback she's getting from at least one other business owner nearby. (Healdsburg Tribune & Shop Local Healdsburg)

  2. Yesterday I wrote about a new piece of public art that the city is funding for $2,500: It's called "Adopt-a-Stop," and it will replace one of the stop sign poles near the plaza with a more "sculptural version." This is one of eight art projects that just got $50,000 total from city officials. Here's a list of the others, courtesy of the Tribune: A series of four "literary events" at THE 222 venue, "highlighting culture and traditions of Indigenous communities in Northern California" ($5,000); The revival of the Prune Box Derby, a long-forgotten Healdsburg tradition in which community members "build imaginative, non-motored, box cars to ride down a hill in town" ($5,000); addition sculpture work by artist Ned Kahn "along an important section of the Foss Creek Pathway" ($20,000); more decoration for the same path, this time in the form of "woven yarn art on a section of Foss Creek Pathway fencing that would be created by several different groups, over six sessions from July to December of 2023" ($2,500); dance performances by the local "Ballet Folklorico Yolotl" group, who will "continue the 37-year history of performing Mexican ballet in Healdsburg and neighboring communities" ($5,000); a project at the Healdsburg Museum that will illuminate the museum's facade with "an array of programmable LED lights" and banners, "creating energy and excitement after dark" ($5,000); and a continuation of the "Art After Dark" summertime night fairs hosted by the Healdsburg Center for the Arts ($2,500). 3. Healdsburg city officials are hosting a "community open house and public workshop" next Wednesday around their Climate Mobilization Strategy, which they've been shaping for some time now. To pique your interest, Ty Benoit, a volunteer coordinator with the Climate Action Healdsburg group, writes the following in a Healdsburg Tribune column this week: "Imagine what Healdsburg might be like in 2035. On hot days, residents and businesses throughout the city of Healdsburg could be cooled by a stunning canopy of shade trees. Urban gardens, farms and vineyards would flourish with locally produced compost. Children could safely ride bikes or walk to school. Protected bike lanes would be created for cyclists, crisscrossing the city from Highway 101 through downtown to north Healdsburg Avenue. Free on-demand electric shuttles would serve not just seniors but those who work in and around the city. More of the water that flows through Healdsburg can be diverted into local aquifers. Recycled water from the wastewater treatment plant keeps the schools, local parks and Plaza green and lush, even during droughts. Sustainable sources of solar, wind and geothermal energy could supply Healdsburg Electric with almost all of the electricity it needs. If any of these ideas are of interest, one may join Climate Action Healdsburg at the City of Healdsburg’s Open House on Wednesday, July 26, between 6 and 7:30pm at the Healdsburg Community Center. Snacks, childcare and Spanish interpretation will be provided." (Chris Herrod via Facebook & Healdsburg Tribune & Press Democrat; paywall)

Healdsburg pics of the day:

Caroline Bontia, the social media maven behind Shop Local Healdsburg, posted some footage of "locals beating the 100 degrees heat" at Memorial Beach earlier this week. "Not surprisingly, the parking lot was full and there were crowds across the street gathering in line by Amy's Wicked Slush 🍦," she wrote. (Image courtesy of Shop Local Healdsburg)
And neighbor Don Hansen shared this pic of his happy hydrangea, which he says has been "loving Healdsburg." (Photo courtesy of Don Hansen)

From my notebook:

  • I mentioned this yesterday, but in case you didn't see: A close friend of mine is looking for a room to rent in Healdsburg from August through October, ideally for under $1,500 per month. Please let me know if you've got any leads! 💙
  • The folks from the Raven Players, Healdsburg's very own theater troupe, need some strong and capable volunteers to help build their sets for upcoming productions. "This is a volunteer position to help our community theatre; however, you will receive four complimentary tickets to a performance of your choice for each production you work on," says a rep for the troupe. "The Raven Players produces 7-8 shows each year. Set builders are expected to commit anywhere from 8-30 hours over a two-week period when the set is constructed on the Raven stage. Choose to work on just one production or as many as you like!" You can check out their website for more info. (RavenTheater.org/Help)
In this photo from last year, Julie Raven Smart helps build the set for a Raven Players production of "The Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged)." Which reminds me: The Players will start their annual run of "Shakespeare in the Park" next week in the plaza, performing "The Comedy of Errors! (Photo courtesy of Janice Sinclaire)
  • The new Molti Amici restaurant in downtown Healdsburg, aka the second coming of Campo Fina, will be opening their doors at 4 p.m. instead of 5:30 p.m., starting next Tuesday — in order "to accommodate more guests." From an email to customers: "Molti Amici will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 4:00 pm until 9:00 pm. Reservations are recommended, but walk-in guests are always welcome. You can make reservations at Resy." (Inbox)
  • Speaking of: Sonoma Mag just ran a big feature on Molti Amici, including lots of pics and details about the people who work there and what they're serving. (Sonoma Magazine)
