Here are the top stories today in Healdsburg:
- Banners showing the faces of "local active duty military members" could soon line Healdsburg Avenue as you drive north toward the plaza, according to the Healdsburg Tribune. The project is called “Hometown Heroes," and it's reportedly a collaboration between the City of Healdsburg and our local Rotary Club and American Legion posts. City officials say they hope to "recognize and honor Healdsburg residents and their immediate family members who are serving our country in the United States Armed Forces" with these tribute banners. In order to be featured on a banner, the city says a service member — or whoever applies for their spot — must be able to verify that they're either a permanent resident of Healdsburg or that they have an immediate family member who lives or works in Healdsburg. Applications can be submitted on the city website. (Healdsburg Hometown Heroes Application & City of Healdsburg & Healdsburg Tribune)

Here are a couple of sample images from the city showing what the new street banners would look like. (Courtesy of the City of Healdsburg) - This coming Fourth of July is gonna be a big one again in downtown Healdsburg. The city and the Rotary Club will be throwing their annual "Kids' Parade & Duck Dash" in the plaza from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 4, alongside the farmers market. There will be a whole bunch of games and races during that time — including a "Bubble Bonanza" and a "Trike Tract" — to the sounds of live music by the Russian River Ramblers, the Healdsburg Community Band and Court 'N' Disaster. Then later that night, when it gets dark around 10 p.m., the city and the American Legion will be staging our traditional 20-to-30-minute fireworks show at the high school. More info from the city: "Due to the size of this year’s show and to ensure spectator safety, viewing at the High School sports fields will not be available this year. Viewing will be available at the Fitch Mountain Elementary School Campus, on the west side of the High School in the parking lot area, and throughout other points in the City. Most of the fireworks will be visible 200 feet in the air and higher so look for places that provide a good view of the sky above the High School." And FYI, there will be no "Tuesdays in the Plaza" concert that night. "While we understand that the concert is a beloved tradition for many of our residents," officials say, "the City’s Police, Fire, Public Works, and Community Services teams — all who have a role in these special events — don’t have the staff capacity to deliver three major events on the July 4 holiday. This change will allow us to focus our resources on facilitating long-standing holiday traditions for our community." (City of Healdsburg & City of Healdsburg & Healdsburg Tribune & NBC Bay Area)

(Flyer courtesy of the City of Healdsburg & the Sunrise Rotary) - The "sunrise" chapter of the Healdsburg Rotary Club — aka, the half that meets at the crack of dawn, versus the "noon" chapter that meets midday — just harvested their first batch of honey from the hives they've been cultivating over the past year in the Alexander Valley, a club rep says. They may even sell some of it at the big Fourth of July event in the plaza next month, which they're organizing alongside the city. Rotary members will also be handing out free sunflower seeds and starter plants at the event, per usual, in an effort to "help important pollinators in our community."
