Here are the top stories in Healdsburg today:

  1. Healdsburg's beloved yearly St. Patrick's Day tradition — a parade through town and afterparty in the plaza — starts bright and early tomorrow! The "biggest shortest parade in the world" begins at Sanderson Ford at 7 a.m. sharp and "will cruise down Healdsburg Avenue, around Plaza Park, and back to the parade start," city officials say. More background from the Healdsburg Tribune: "If there’s one thing Healdsburg residents agree on, it’s that there are only two parades worth attending year-in and year-out. One is the late-May Twilight Parade that kicks off the Future Farmers fair. The other is the pre-dawn parade around the Plaza, every St. Patrick’s Day since time immemorial. Or the early 1990s, at any rate. It used to originate at the B&B Lounge, where John and Zeke’s now stands (420 Healdsburg Ave.). The tradition began there one St. Patrick’s morn, possibly by design, but more likely out of spontaneous celebration. Hundreds of parade goers will show up early Friday morning to carry on the tradition, for its 30th year. Attendees are encouraged to dress in festive attire and get in the spirit of the 'biggest shortest parade in the world.'” Then, from 10:30 a.m. through 2 p.m., a whole bunch of St. Patty's festivities will transpire in the plaza itself — including performances by a Celtic rock band and an Irish step-dancing group, as well as family-friendly stuff like "Gaelic games with prizes, Irish storytelling, face painting, fairy-building kits for children and more," city officials say. They add: "Enjoy free ‘lucky charm’ popcorn, Irish green bagels with cream cheese, and green apple juice. Don’t miss this chance to put on your green and celebrate the best of Irish art and culture in Healdsburg, where everyone is an Honorary Irish Person (H.I.P.) on St. Patrick’s Day!" 2. One of Healdsburg's most successful and well-loved local businesses, Healdsburg Lumber Company, plans to move into a larger space across the river next month, according to the North Bay Business Journal. From the story: "Representing the third generation of the Ziedrich family that has owned the Healdsburg Lumber Company (HLC) since 1972, President Jill Ziedrich Gaylor has embraced her father’s vision to transform the business into a modern showplace for innovative solutions, supplies and tools for builders, contractors and homeowners at a time when demand is increasing for new housing and upgrades. She said HLC’s latest venture includes moving the firm to a new site at 13534 Healdsburg Ave. on April 17 from its present location at 359 Hudson Street near downtown. The new 30,000-square-foot structure is a third larger than HLC’s present location. This structure is 99% complete as workers install multilevel display racks and stock shelves in spacious two-story showrooms. The relocated headquarters is less than half a mile from Healdsburg’s first northbound off ramp from Highway 101, a site chosen for easy access to an industrial area away from inner city residential communities." From my notebook:

  • The Press Democrat has a pretty comprehensive recap of all the damage caused by Tuesday's storm across our greater region — including mudslides, downed trees, power outages, cars stuck in floodwaters and more. (Press Democrat; paywall)
  • And up near the border of Mendocino and Humboldt Counties, the 101 actually gave out in one spot, according to the PD. A section of the highway "near Cooks Valley along a bend in the South Fork Eel River" reportedly "became so waterlogged it caved in on itself, harming both lanes." You can follow Caltrans for updates. (Caltrans District 1 via Twitter & Press Democrat; paywall)
  • Here in Healdsburg, our vice mayor took some (much less dramatic but still impressive) video footage of "the Parkland Farms Stormwater Detention Pond working overtime" on Tuesday. (David Hagele via Facebook)
  • These late-winter/early-spring rains likely aren't over yet, forecasters warn. "As many as two more atmospheric rivers could douse the already sodden West Coast in the next week," Bay City News reports. And this, from the PD: "One, which may materialize this weekend, could bring light to moderate showers. The other, predicted for March 21 to 23, has the potential to drop heavy rain and bring strong winds, said Patrick Ayd, a meteorologist with the weather service’s Monterey office." (Bay City News via Patch & Press Democrat; paywall)
  • Given all this rain and Sonoma County's now-overflowing reservoirs, the City of Santa Rosa just "ended its emergency drought declaration," the PD reports — which "means city-ordered water conservation measures in place since 2021, such as limiting when residents can water their lawn, will be rolled back." Haven't seen any word yet from Healdsburg city leaders yet on whether they'll consider the same... (Press Democrat & Press Democrat; paywall)
