Here are the top 3 stories today in Healdsburg:

  1. Ah yes, the age-old question: What's going on with the Foley Family Pavilion, potential future home of the Healdsburg Farmers Market? The Tribune has an update for us from last week's City Council meeting, where councilmembers gave their final stamp of approval on the design of the pavilion. It will be built "on the site and in the style of the former Purity warehouse" at 3 North St. next to Little Saint, the Tribune reports — a project funded largely by the charitable arm of the billion-dollar Foley family. The city's website says they expect it to open in summer or fall of next year. However! "The council meeting revealed a disconnect between the stated purpose of the project, as a new home for the farmers’ market, and the willingness of the Healdsburg Farmers’ Market itself to move in," the Tribune reports. While the city staffers presenting the design proposal assured councilmembers that, to their knowledge, the market was still "in full support of this" design, market manager Janet Ciel later told the Trib: "We’re excited about the Foley Pavilion, but have expressed concerns to the city regarding our ability to fit into the space itself, and the additional stretch of North St. which would be closed for us each week. This has been a concern since the beginning of the project, so the city is aware of our issues, and now our market has grown to such a size that projections made years ago no longer apply." So we'll see how all that shakes out! Read more and see the latest renderings of the pavilion here... (Healdsburg Tribune & City of Healdsburg)
  2. Speaking of the farmers market. The new season for the Tuesday version of the market, held right on the Healdsburg plaza, starts one week from today, on May 16. It will run from 9 a.m. through 12:30 p.m. every Tuesday through the end of September. According to the market's latest newsletter, Tuesday vendors will include local favorite Quail and Condor Bakery; a new chicken and ribs grab-and-go stand called What-A-Chicken; Nellie's Oysters; Moxie's Frozen Yogurt; the Poppies & Petals flower farm; a guy named Art Downing with a knife-sharpening stand, who'll do your scissors and gardening tools as well; the "biodynamic" Eco Terrano Farm & Winery, from Alexander Valley; Mama Yali's Dumpling Kitchen; Freeze, a snack stand that "freeze-dries everything except the kitchen sink"; Healthy Haven Wellness, serving "fresh juices and luscious salads in jars"; two soap makers, Lianna Soaps from San Francisco and Cultured Goat Soap Co. from Monte Rio; a bunch of farms including Russian River Organics and Duncan's Mushrooms; returning food stands like Anna's Seafood and Soultopia; craft makers like Jendala, Mendo Madrone and Ed Laney, The Tinkerer; and many more! 3. Some former students of The Healdsburg School — the small, private elementary and middle school at the south end of town — have banded together to create a "math league" and tournament at the school for kids across Sonoma County, according to the Press Democrat. It's called "Math4Everyone," and its young founders say they started it to help offset the pandemic's dismal effect on middle-school math scores. The students — Barry Liu, Cecilia Brenner, Meher Dhiman and Lisa Zheng — all attend different high schools now, but reportedly came together and "reached out to The Healdsburg School Principal Andy Davies and their middle school math teacher, Carrie Smith, and asked if they thought it was a good idea and if they could use some space in the school on Sundays." The principal says she "of course, immediately said yes." She adds: “For us this was a really authentic example for our mission as a school, and we were absolutely impressed. It's just heartwarming, actually, as an educator. There's a lot of bad news in education, and this was a really good thing.” Every Sunday, the four founding students "tutor middle schoolers in classes using games and practice problems" and "assign weekly homework and hold office hours to provide extra support," the PD reports. "All of it leads up to one big tournament, which they held on Sunday at The Healdsburg School. The four were motivated to help, knowing firsthand how hard it was to really grasp new math concepts during the shift to virtual learning during pandemic lockdowns." Pretty sweet, right? Healdsburg pic of the day:

Alexander Valley Film Society (AVFilm) photographer Israel Valencia took this pic of a very magical thing that happened last week at AVFest, the org's big annual film festival. An outdoor screening of "Sorry, We're Closed" — a film about the mental health of chefs during the pandemic — was scheduled for Wednesday night at Catelli's Restaurant in Geyserville. But then it started raining. Org leaders wrote on Facebook: "Geyserville Fire Department to the rescue! When the weather didn’t budge, Scott Newman, Chief Turbeville, and team stepped in and allowed us to share a special screening of SORRY, WE'RE CLOSED with the community in the firehouse! Definitely, a cool place to see a movie! Thank you!" The woman behind the Shop Local Healdsburg blog was in attendance as well, and captured some great footage. She wrote: "How fittingly it was to champion this film at Catelli's restaurant, a landmark in Geyserville that opened around 1936 by Italian immigrants Santi and Virginia Catelli. And what a show of community, that the Geyserville's firehouse welcomed the showing of the film at their station as AVFilm's Plan B, when the rain dampened outdoor screening at Catelli's. In return we were told that the firehouse simply asked for ice-cream in exchange." You can keep track of what AVFilm gets up to next on their website, Twitter, Facebook or Instagram page. From my notebook:

  • There will be some roadwork happening on Memorial Bridge through about 4 p.m. this afternoon, city officials say. Crews are reportedly installing an armor plate to repair damage on the northeast corner of the bridge. "Work will take place near the travel lane and may require periodic delays in traffic movement," officials say. "Please choose alternate routes and pay attention to signage and the direction of workers in that area." (Healdsburg Patch)
  • There's also that big PG&E project on local streets through Thursday. The utility company is "performing required slurry seal street restoration on various street segments where gas line upgrades have been installed" in Healdsburg, according to the city. Watch out for "lane closures and other traffic control measures" across town. Check out the exact streets affected here. (City of Healdsburg via Facebook)
