Pedestrian Fatally Struck On U.S. 101 In Sonoma County

Northbound U.S. Highway 101 was shut down for two hours as the fatal crash was investigated.

SONOMA COUNTY, CA — A man died early Friday morning on U.S. Highway 101 when he was walking on the freeway and was struck by a car, the California Highway Patrol said.

Santa Rosa CHP officers responded and found the pedestrian nonresponsive shortly before 2:30 a.m. Friday on northbound US-101 just north of Airport Boulevard. Sonoma County Fire personnel also responded and pronounced the man dead.

The CHP's preliminary investigation indicated the collision happened as the driver of a Toyota Camry sedan was traveling northbound on US-101 in the middle lane and the pedestrian was walking across the lanes of traffic, from the right side of the roadway toward the center median.

The man driving the Camry was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries suffered in the crash.

Officers determined the driver was not under the influence of alcohol, the CHP said.

Northbound 101 was shut down for two hours as the fatal crash was investigated.

The Sonoma County Sheriff-Coroner's Office was expected to identify the man once his next of kin were notified.

The CHP asked anyone with information regarding the collision to call the Santa Rosa CHP office at 707-588-1400.
