The fight for the seat was a contentious one with both sides trading nasty barbs at each other. Hall, a state senator currently representing the 35th district, which emcompasses parts of the South Bay, accused Barragan of leading a racist campaign, saying he would be a "black taint" on the Democratic party.

Barragan said Hall was “the worst type of politician who talks out of both sides of his mouth,” in an interview with the Daily Breeze.
