Hermosa Beach to Test Wheel-Chair Accessibility Mats on Beach

The city is receiving a free trial of the mats to test the feasibility of implementing them on an event basis.

HERMOSA BEACH, CA — Looking to provide accessibility to the beach for elderly and mobility-impaired residents, the city of Hermosa Beach will be testing out wheel-chair accessibility mats on its beaches.

The mats, a five to six-and-a-half feet wide pathway, are temporary fixtures that can be rolled out to provide easy access for people with walkers, canes and wheelchair to the beach. The city will receive between 33 and 83 feet of the mats to test from Mobi-Mats.

The city plans on using them on an event basis, such as summer concerts or movies, before making its decision. The idea for the mats came from seniors advocate and local resident Geoff Hirsch.

Since the city is still in the testing phase, the anticipated cost of the mats has not been calculated. If the city decides to buy the mats, a request for proposal will be issued if there are any competitors, otherwise, the city can buy them directly from Mobi-Mats.
