Hermosa's Only Coffee Bean Closed

The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf on Hermosa Avenue closed June 20.

The on Hermosa Avenue, where Hermosa Beach residents used to sit outside with their dogs while sipping an iced tea or nestle on the second floor for coffee dates, has shut down.

After closing June 20, the local coffee shop's windows now are boarded and a sign hangs on the front door that reads, "we appreciate your business" and lists other nearby Coffee Bean locations (see accompanying photo.)

The international coffee and tea company opened the coffee shop on Hermosa Avenue in 1997. A company representative told Patch on Monday that the "lease was up at this location and they opted not to renew."

The Coffee Bean on Hermosa Avenue was the business's only Hermosa Beach location. There are four in neighboring Manhattan Beach and two in Redondo Beach, according to the company's online store locator.

For many Hermosa Beach residents, the allure of visiting the local Coffee Bean wasn't just the coffee, but rather the building, —back then it housed .

"A lot of older people will come in and say, 'wow, I used to come here when I was younger,'" said former Coffee Bean worker Janel Ylauan last year, adding that the building has always been a popular community-gathering place.

Local coffee drinkers still have the option of getting their morning cups of joe at a  that sits next to the Coffee Bean on Hermosa Avenue, but be warned, the Starbucks has been undergoing renovation this month.
