Paddle-Out for LeRoy Grannis Set

A memorial for the legendary surf photographer is to be held June 25 at 11 a.m. at the Hermosa Beach Pier.

Update (Monday, June 6, 12:12 p.m.) —  on Hermosa Avenue will feature exclusive, never-before-seen images produced by LeRoy Grannis as part of LeRoy's memorial ceremony June 25, Bridges told Patch on Monday. Bridges and John Grannis are curating the show with original signed pieces that LeRoy shot of surfers, including Greg Noll, The Duke, Rabbit Kekai, Dale Velzy, Pete Peterson, Doc Ball, and Mike Doyle.

Hermosa Beach residents and the surf community plan to remember the late LeRoy "Granny" Grannis with a paddle-out memorial in June.

Grannis, a Hermosa native renowned for his surf photography,  at a Torrance nursing home, according to his family.

Now his family and friends are planning a paddle-out to be held June 25 at 11 a.m. on the south side of the Pier in his honor.

Surfers will gather to paddle out into the ocean together to commemorate Grannis' life and how he loved the sport of surfing—flowers are also traditionally tossed into the ocean in memory of a lost loved one during paddle-out ceremonies.

The event will include guest speakers and a video slideshow of some iconic Grannis photography at restaurant on Pier Plaza.

The Hermosa Beach City Council approved the event plans in a meeting Tuesday night (see accompanying staff report.)
