Hermosa Beach's Valley Park

The is sometimes filled with children playing during the week and groups playing with frisbees, walking their dogs and barbecuing on the weekend.

• Con: The park is adjacent to a busy intersection—Valley and Gould.

Manhattan Beach's Polliwog Park

Being 18 acres, the has enough room for everybody, and includes a large pond. There are three gazebos and a picnic area, ideal for an afternoon lunch, birthday gathering or family reunion.

• Pro: The park is also home to a 9-hole disc golf course, the Manhattan Beach Botanical Garden, a public swimming pool.

Redondo Beach's Franklin Park

The park on Inglewood Avenue between Grant Avenue and Ralston Lane offers great lawns of green to bring a blanket and basket for a picnic—find a spot under a tree and enjoy the quiet breeze.

• Con: There are some small mounds in the area, so be careful where you walk so you don't twist an ankle.
