Police Blotter: Catalytic Converter Thefts

Officers continue to search for the thieves after two converters were stolen in the same day.

Thieves have been sweeping the Hermosa and Redondo Beach areas in search of catalytic converters for the past month. Platinum is a vital component of converters, which the criminals may be after.

For the thieves, platinum is currently selling for about $1,500 an ounce. But for the victims, replacing the car part can cost $500 to $1,000.

A catalytic converter was taken from a vehicle without the owner's permission around 10:20 a.m. on Monday. The thief pilfered the converter from the vehicle's exhaust system on the 1200 block of 19th Street. Officers are continuing to investigate the theft.

A catalytic converter was stolen from a vehicle on the 2400 block of Prospect Avenue Monday night around 8:19 p.m. The thief used an unknown object to remove the converter, according to police. Officers have not reported whether or not residents noticed any suspicious activity in the area that could lead to catching a suspect.
