Famous South Bay Surfer, Filmmaker Dies After ALS Battle: Report
Surfer and filmmaker Greg Browning died April 11, at the age of 50.
HERMOSA BEACH, CA — Beloved surfer and filmmaker Greg Browning has died after more than a year-long battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, according to a report by the Daily Breeze. He was 50.
Browning, who grew up in Hermosa Beach and was inducted into the city's Surfers Walk of Fame in 2024, served as an inspiration for many surfers in the area, according to the report.
Browning was diagnosed with ALS in 2023, according to the report. ALS has no cure and is a neurogenerative disease that attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, progressively limiting movement over time.

“Greg was consistently the most considerate person I’ve ever met,” fellow filmmaker Taylor Steele wrote on Instagram on April 13. “But it was in his final chapter — facing ALS — that he revealed a deeper power. Not just in how he endured, but in how he showed up for others, even as his body faded.”
