Pier Repair

A section of the Hermosa Beach pier remains closed off after a piling was found to be damaged in the northern surf zone. A diving crew began work on the piling in July, but it was decided this week that further repair to the 50-year-old pier will commence in the fall.

Even though Hermosa Beach ranked as the most affluent city in Los Angeles County, life expectancy in the area measures around the same as the county average, according to a recent report from the county's Department of Public Health. Seniors living in Hermosa have been surprised by the study, and talked to Patch about how they stay healthy.

Avanti Robbery

Two suspects robbed Avanti Jewelers on Pacific Coast Highway Tuesday morning, the storeowner, who was held at gunpoint, told police. Detectives released a sketch of the gunman Wednesday. Investigation into the crime continues.

Prop. 8 Reaction

U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker ruled Wednesday that Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriage, is unconstitutional. Supporters of the proposition quickly filed an appeal to the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals Thursday. Residents were outspoken about their thoughts on the case.

Ragin Food Truck

Despite an impending relocation, the Pier Avenue restaurant Ragin Cajun will be featured on a new Food Network reality show "The Great Food Truck Race" as one of seven food truck competitors. The show, and the restaurant's food truck, debuts Sunday, Aug. 15.
