Highland Park House Fire Leaves 1 Dead, Firefighters Say

Firefighters battled heavy flames at a single-family home in Highland Park. One person was found dead inside the home.

HIGHLAND PARK, CA — One person was found dead inside a burning home in Highland Park, firefighters said.

About 30 firefighters were called to a burning home around 11:45 p.m. Monday on South Ave 52, near Bomer Drive, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

Heavy flames burned at the one-story, single-family home, threatening buildings on three sides. Firefighters battled the blaze from the outside and prevented the flames from spreading to the nearby buildings, the fire department said.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze in about 40 minutes. One person was found dead inside. The name of the person wasn't immediately known.

The county coroner will determine the cause of death, NBCLA reported.

"There was no furniture inside, but the radio was on. And then a bunch of kids started climbing in, trying to get stuff from the house. I don't know if they were trying to save the guy that allegedly lives in there," witness Kylar Loya told the TV station.
