The Long Beach man was ruled competent to stand trial after he allegedly killed a Laguna Beach doctor he had no connection to.

DANA POINT, CA — A Long Beach man charged with killing a Laguna Beach doctor in Dana Point two years ago appeared in court Friday after a judge ruled him competent to stand trial in December, the Daily Pilot reported.

Vanroy Evan Smith was accused hitting Michael Mammone with a white Lexus while the emergency physician was riding his bicycle, then stabbing him to death, on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2023, the report said.

He faces one count of murder and potential sentencing enhancements for the reported use of a deadly weapon and lying in wait for his victim.
