DANA POINT, CA — Travelers aboard a Dana Wharf Whale Watching water vessel were treated to a special sight this week: a pod of about 40 offshore bottlenose dolphin.

The pod was spotted three miles offshore, just north of San Mateo Point. According to Dana Wharf Photographer Laura Lopez, the pod eagerly greeted passengers and rushed alongside the Ocean Adventures.

Not long after, a pod of common dolphin was seen racing north just three miles from the Dana Point Harbor.

"By noon as we left the harbor, several pods were visible with one to the west, while at least two more pods were heading north above the headlands," Lopez told Patch. "Both northbound groups turned south to meet us, eventually merging into a single megapod, with the entire herd surrounding us."
