E-Bike Policy To Hit Capistrano Unified Schools: Report

Capistrano Unified officials voted to enact a "Safe Routes to School" policy to give students guidance on using e-bikes on and off campus.

DANA POINT, CA — Capistrano Unified students will soon have more guidance on how to safely use their electric bikes on and off campus, the Dana Point Times Reported.

The Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees voted to enact a "Safe Routes to School" policy that is intended to provide guidelines for students on how to safely ride an electric bike. The trustees made their vote at the board's Wednesday, Sept. 21 meeting, according to the report.

The policy would also include guidelines on how to safely store an electric bike on campus.

Board President Martha McNicholas said that specific details of the policy were "still in development," the report said.

In-depth details on specific policy guidelines were not available via the board's staff report. According to an agenda report, each Capistrano Unified School District school is responsible for developing their own policy procedures.

“Strategies in support of the Safe Routes to School Program shall be based on the grade levels of the students and an assessment of the conditions and needs of each school and the surrounding neighborhoods,” the district said in its report.

Safety concerns over e-bike usage have grown across South Orange County, with officials, law enforcements officers and school resource officers advocating for an education-first approach to addressing reckless ridership on electric bikes.
