How To Report COVID Positive Cases To Your School In Dana Point

Here's how to report your child's COVID-19 status to their school in Dana Point.

DANA POINT, CA — Two of Orange County's largest school districts — Capistrano Unified and Santa Ana Unified School Districts, now have more than 1,000 COVID-19 cases in staff and students, Voice of OC reported Wednesday. With the surge of COVID-19 cases being seen countywide, some parents may be asking: How do I report my child if they test positive for COVID-19?

Parents of students attending a Capistrano Unified School District school should report any incident of COVID-19 symptoms, close contact exposure or positive testing results to your school. Generally, these calls are reported to a school nurse who can be reached through the front desk.

Before notifying your school of your child's positive COVID-19 status, be sure to get your child a formal COVID-19 test. If the test result is negative and the student is asymptomatic, the student can return to school, Capistrano Unified School District wrote on its website.

If you and your student are notified of a required quarantine or isolation period due to the illness, Capistrano Unified School District said to work with your respective school site office staff to get an Independent Study Contract for the duration of the student's absence.

For your student's COVID-19 positive status to be recorded officially by their respective school, positive test results must be read by a professional or laboratory to be logged, according to the Capistrano Unified School District.

While parents of children experiencing COVID-19 symptoms may be anxious to send their child back to school, the Capistrano Unified School District wrote on its website that over the counter, at-home testing kits with immediate results not read by a lab are not allowed to be submitted for "evaluation of an individual's COVID-19 status."

However, kits provided free by your school site for families of students who are either in-home quarantining and would like to return after day seven and for students who are in "modified quarantine."
