"It's crazy. I was supposed to surf at 7 a.m. with a friend, but that changed last minute. All day long I tried to get out on my lunch break and after work, but so many things stopped me," Carroll told Patch. "Honestly, I was getting so frustrated that nothing was working out. I was meant to be there at that time. God put me there."
"I remember when River was taken by the firemen. I stared at the ocean and sobbed, thanking god for putting me there."
