2 Freeway Workers Struck, Killed On State Route 71 In Chino

A box truck driver lost control and struck the workers.

CHINO, CA — The identities of two contracted Caltrans workers killed on the 71 freeway in Chino were pending Tuesday.

According to the California Highway Patrol, around 8:37 a.m. Monday a box truck clipped a workcrew van parked on the freeway's northbound shoulder near South Euclid Avenue, just north of the Butterfield Ranch area.

The box truck driver lost control and the vehicle went through the right-hand guardrail, hitting two workers who were picking up trash on an embankment.

One of the victims died at the scene, while the other succumbed to injuries at a local hospital.

Two other workers suffered minor injuries.

Drugs and/or alcohol did not appear to be crash factors, according to the CHP.

The box truck driver was cooperating with the investigation, and no arrests were announced.
