IE Hanukkah Drive-By Airsoft Shooting Prompts Police Investigation

REDLANDS, CA — A drive-by pellet-gun shooting of a Redlands home decorated for Hanukkah, is being investigated as a potential hate crime targeting a Jewish family, police say.

The incident, which occurred on Friday in the 1300 block of Magnolia Avenue, has drawn local outrage.

The homeowner posted on Instagram that their family was attacked by an antisemitic person who was parked outside of a neighbor's home. Three minutes later, the home's security cameras caught sight of the same vehicle shooting "at least 20 rounds from an unidentified projectile weapon" at my family's house and Hanukkah decorations, shouting more obscenities (see video below).

Redlands Police Department Information Officer Carl Baker confirmed the vehicle drove by the residence and fired several Airsoft pellet rounds.

"No injuries or damage were reported," Baker said in a news release. "No shell casings were found, and home surveillance video showed no muzzle flash, leading police to believe the weapon was an airsoft handgun."

Police believe the family was targeted because of the festive decorations set up outside.

"As our friends in the Jewish community begin their celebration of Hanukkah, several tragic incidents have occurred across the globe, targeting people simply because of their faith," Baker shared over social media. "Unfortunately, Redlands is not immune to these hateful acts, as a local family was targeted because of their festive home decorations celebrating Hanukkah."

Redlands Mayor Mario Saucedo spoke out about the incident.

“While we are relieved that no injuries occurred, it is important to reaffirm our support of our community members, no matter their faith,” Saucedo said. “Violence and hatred have no place in Redlands.”

Neighbors shared their support of the family and the police investigation on social media.

"As a Jewish member of Redlands and a long-time first responder, I appreciate your attention to this matter in keeping our children and us safe," one resident wrote.

Another wrote, "Thank you, RPD. This is despicable. Shalom to this family."

Over 100 more commenters thanked the Redlands Police Department and offered notes of support to the family.

"To the family who was targeted, I hope you have a wonderful holiday despite this. Please know the majority of the rest of us love & respect you. I’m so sorry to read this. Disheartened that we still have so much hate in this advanced world."

"The Redlands Police Department is actively investigating the incident and will continue to provide additional patrols in the area and around places of worship within the City," Baker said.
