RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA — A planned weekend closure of the eastbound Riverside (91) Freeway in downtown Corona has been postponed indefinitely.

The freeway had been scheduled to shut down for re-surfacing work from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday between Main Street and the 91/Interstate 15 interchange.

However, the Riverside County Transportation Commission put off the work because officials were not confident they would be able to re-open the stretch of freeway in time for the Monday morning commute.

"It's important to have a high degree of confidence that we are going to be able to reopen by Monday morning," Aaron Hake, deputy executive director of the commission, told the OC Register on Tuesday.

Hake did not know when the work would be rescheduled, but said the commission would set another full-weekend closure soon.

The agency said the closure is required for ongoing operations connected to the $12.6 million "91 Refresh Project," which entails resurfacing lanes, modifying retaining walls and repairing concrete barriers on both sides of the freeway.

The upcoming closure will not impact the westbound 91, according to RCTC.

The project was expected to wrap up by December. Motorists can visit www.rctc.org/91refresh for up-to-date information on the closure.
