1 Killed In Multi-Car Crash; 5 Freeway Jammed Amid Rush Hour Traffic

The crash was reported Monday morning in south Orange County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

IRVINE, CA — One person was killed Monday in a multi-vehicle crash on the Interstate 5 Freeway in Irvine, authorities said.

The crash was reported around 8:30 a.m. on the northbound side of the freeway, just south of Jeffrey Road.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by the California Highway Patrol.

It wasn't immediately clear if anyone else was injured in the crash, which jammed rush-hour traffic traveling on both sides of the freeway.

The crash prompted the CHP to issue lane closures on both sides of the freeway.

As of 10:37 a.m., authorities reopened two lanes on the freeway, but traffic was still slow-moving.

Travelers were urged to avoid the area.
