Mattress Strikes Car On 5 Freeway, Traffic Halted At El Toro Road

No sleeping at the wheel, drivers. A mattress and other debris flew from the back of a truck on the 5 Freeway, damaging cars.

LAKE FOREST, CA — Drivers heading up I-5 northbound from the 73 through Lake Forest were at a halt Monday morning after a mattress struck a car, officials say.

Just after 10:45 a.m. a mattress flew from the back of a truck and struck a car causing damage, California Highway Patrol officers say.

A large piece of metal was also reported in lanes. Further to the south, a dining room chair was also spotted on the 5 northbound near the 73, according to CHP reports.

It is not yet known if anyone was hurt in the incident. There was no report of injury due to the chair, however, the mattress did cause damage to at least one car.

"The mattress is still blocking the middle lanes of the freeway, northbound at El Toro Road," CHP reported.

Traffic was slow south into Mission Viejo, at Oso Parkway, California Highway Patrol reports.

A traffic break has been requested in the area, to clean up the roadway and prevent further damage to cars.
