An excessive heat warning is in effect through 8 p.m. Monday in San Diego County, according to the National Weather Service.

LA MESA, CA — A brutal and long heat wave will bring scorching temperatures to San Diego County and the rest of Southern California this week and through Labor Day weekend.

An excessive heat warning is in effect from 10 a.m. Tuesday through 8 p.m. Monday in the county, including the city of La Mesa, according to the National Weather Service.

Over the period, "dangerously hot conditions"are expected with temperatures well into the 80s at the beaches, the 90s in the inland valleys and up to 115 in the deserts. High humidity levels will make it feel even hotter, according to the NWS.

"Extreme heat will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities," the NWS warned.

The weather service advised community members to stay indoors and seek air-conditioned buildings. People should also drink plenty of water and avoid dehydrating alcoholic, sugary or caffeinated drinks; dress in lightweight, light-colored clothing; eat small but more frequent meals; and keep an eye on those who may be particularly vulnerable to the heat, including small children and the elderly.
