Gire, who serves as executive officer of a field hospital for the U.S. Navy, said his wife initially applied and interviewed to appear on the show. The family was in the audience for the episode that aired on May 18. Gire's son was called to the front but did not make it on stage.

"When we were on the show the first time, I told the person doing the followup interviews that I was active-duty military, and that is when I was invited to come back for the all-military show," he explained.
