"Lamorinda" To Appear On Local Wine Labels

A federal ruling on Wednesday allows winemakers in the Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda areas to more specifically designate their labels.

LAMORINDA - Wine drinkers in the Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda areas will soon be able to find exclusively local vintages more easily when they shop.

Bottles of wine produced in the immediate area will now be allowed to brand the label with a new Lamorinda Viticultural Area notation.

The decision was announced by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB), the federal agency regulating the wine industry.

The decision establishes the Lamorinda Viticultural Area in Contra Costa County. According to a blog posted on the San Jose Mercury News website, the new area includes five bonded wineries: Bulldog Creek Vineyard, Captain Vineyards, Deer Hill Vineyards, Meadow View Winery and Vincenza Ranch Vineyard.

The paper says wineries here are known for red varietals, including cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, syrah, petite sirah, petit verdot and sangiovese.
