LIVERMORE, CA - If you’re like many of your Livermore neighbors, you may spend a good part of the holiday season with your credit card in hand buying gifts for family and friends. Coming up soon is a chance to give back to the local community.

Giving Tuesday, which in 2024 falls on Dec. 3, is a day dedicated to supporting nonprofit and community groups. Since 2012, nonprofits worldwide have used the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to galvanize fundraising, rally volunteers and add momentum to their causes.

Maintaining funding is a constant challenge for many nonprofits that fill gaps and meet other needs. Below are five great Livermore nonprofits to consider getting behind on Giving Tuesday.

However, they are only a few of the many nonprofits in and around Livermore doing incredible work. The Tri-Valley Nonprofit Alliance provides an extensive list of local nonprofits. We also published two lists last year that highlight impressive local organizations.

  1. The Community Health and Education Foundation provides resources and opportunities to local nonprofits with a common goal of improving public health and education. CHEF supports organizations that advocate for local youth, underserved members of the community, and the humane treatment of animals. CHEF donates a total of approximately $10,000 monthly to organizations like Monthly Miracles, Open Heart Kitchen, the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Alliance, the Livermore Amador Symphony, and many more.
  2. Fertile GroundWorks aims to teach individuals and communities how to grow healthy, nutritious food organically and sustainably. They operate the Garden of Grace, a teaching garden on the grounds of Asbury United Methodist Church, and the food grown there is given to local food pantries and partner organizations. They have harvested over 200,000 pounds of food to share with people in need, and taught over 1,400 volunteers various sustainable food production techniques.
  3. Goodness Village is a community of 28 tiny homes in Livermore that aims to provide supportive housing for people experiencing homelessness. Residents who are able to pay 30% of their monthly income as rent and abide by the rules are able to stay as long as they like, while they work with 24/7 supportive staff to find ways to heal and thrive.
  4. Reins in Motion provides weekly therapeutic horseback riding for people in need, helping provide physical, occupational and speech therapy as well as mental and emotional development to children in need, and local veterans. The organization serves children as young as 2.5 to as long as the services are needed. Certified instructors work with clients to determine individual lesson plans that are optimal for their growth.
  5. The Rotarian Foundation of Livermore is the charitable arm of the Rotary Club of Livermore. Since it began in 1999, it has infused over $1.2 million into the local community. It awards numerous scholarships and grants to help improve public health, safety, and education, including the Student Education Loan Fund, which provides interest-free college loans to 2o-25 students a year.
