Livermore Pizzeria Has Best Pepperoni Slice In The Bay: SF Chronicle

See which Livermore pizzeria beat out dozens of other spots in San Francisco and Oakland for the coveted title.

LIVERMORE, CA — Corner Slice in Livermore makes the best slice of pepperoni pizza in the Bay Area, according to San Francisco Chronicle food critic Cesar Hernandez.

Hernandez traveled all over the region's New York-style pizzerias to find the perfect pepperoni, one with "some weight and chew, a hint of char around the edges and slight smokiness, but not too much — it shouldn’t taste like smoked ham."

After a delectable tour, Hernandez crowned Corner Slice, located on 2852 Kitty Hawk Road, the undisputed champion.

"The Livermore pizzeria has an eye for quality ingredients: The tomatoes are from Bianco, pepperoni comes from Ezzo and the Italian flour is via Petra. A blend of breadmaking techniques — which includes a 3-day process that utilizes a pre-ferment called biga — produces crusts with a crisp exterior and fluffy interior. The resulting slice is transportive, taking me straight back to grade-school pizza parties," he wrote.

Hernandez also praised the restaurant's 90s decor, which includes arcade games and VHS tapes.

Like most good things in life, supplies are limited. Corner Slice, run by spouses Kamille Castillo Fernandez and Joseph Pellacani Fernandez, offers limited slices for lunch from 12-2 p.m. on a first come, first serve basis from Wednesday through Saturday. If you'd like a slice, ordering in advance is advised.

Corner Slice goes far beyond pepperoni. You can order the "Cheesus Crust" (tomato sauce, buffalo mozzarella), Italian Sausage, Veggie Club, Peppa Pig, the Burrata X Hot Honey, and the Shroom Dealer (which contains perfectly innocent mushrooms, despite the name.)

Runners-up include Outta Sight Pizza in San Francisco, Mama's Boy in Oakland, Pizza Ponte in Oakland, and Che Fico Pizzeria in San Francisco.
