Monday, Aug. 26 is National Dog Day and Livermore Patch Editor Mayra Flores De Marcotte asked Facebook readers if they remembered their first dog.
My first dog was an overly excited Doberman/German Shepherd mix named Popis that loved my family and I with every shake of his tail. I've had many dogs since him, the most recent addition to my family a Black Lab/Pitt Bull mix rescue named Lula. She's 75 pounds of love and is convinced she's a cat.
Other readers shared their memories. Here are a few of them.
- Robert: I'm allergic to dogs...but my aunt had a beautiful black lab when I was growing up, whose name was Tasha....that dog was my first experience with one
- Carole: yes, nicky and Jinx in l950. beloved pets. Still remember them. and then Buffy . . .the best little dog ever.
- Richard: Cinnamon, a yellow Lab I got when I was 5....when I was 16 I suffered my first real loss.
- Skye: Meeko and Mozart. Meeko had to get a new home because she started attacking Mozart. Mozart lived till he was about 14. I was 15 when he passed.
- Sean: Yep. St. Bernard named Brandy.
- Jennifer: Toy poodle, white. His name was Sam. I got him when I was 10 and he had to be put down 19 years later when I was 29. He saw me through middle school, high school, college, and my wedding. Good boy.
- Skye: First dog that I picked out and begged my parents to adopt was a german shepherd named Zeus. He became my dads dog after a while. He chose him. First dog that was actually mine is my dog still. Orson is an australian cattle dog mix.
