Boy Scout Working to Build Sandbox for School

Granada High student needs financial help to purchase materials for his Eagle Scout project.

Carl Corbett is one project away from reaching a childhood dream of becoming an Eagle Scout.

The scout from Troop 931 is planning to build a new sandbox complete with a shade structure for the Livemore Playchool Co-Op. However, the senior needs help.

Corbett, 17, has yet to reach a fund-raising goal of just over $1,000 to purchase the materials needed for his project: wood, sand, PVC and other supplies.

"I was going to ask my family to help, but there's no way I can get all this money," he said. "I didn't suspect it would be this much."

Corbett, with the help of Mayor Marshall Kamena, recently reached out to city officials and the business community asking for financial contributions toward his project. The early returns have been promising, but he still hasn't met his goal.

Corbett wanted to build a sandbox for a local school because he plans to pursue a career in education.

"It looks like kids will just be playing in a sandbox," he said. "But the truth is they are getting to know each other. They are sitting there bonding and developing skills on how to work together and be team members."

Corbett is eager to get started on the project soon and hopes to complete it by November.
