💧 Water Crisis Poll! 💧
Residents are limited to watering their landscapes two days per week, before 9 a.m. or after 4 p.m. What else should the City do to deal with the water crisis? Please let me know your thoughts! So far, 19.1% want to mandate drought-resistant landscaping, 21.3% want to recycle wastewater for irrigation, another 39.3% want to build a desalination plant at the coast, and 20.2% don’t believe residential water use contributes to the water crisis.
Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:
- Were you caught up in Monday’s 710 freeway closure? A fatal crash around 5 a.m. led to jams in both directions. “A pickup truck crashed into the center divider near Willow Street, according to the CHP.” (LB Post)
- Late Saturday morning, there was an officer-involved shooting that left a man in his 40s dead. Officers were called to the 1100 block of East 17th Street, where they saw the man on the roof “holding what appeared to be a firearm.” SWAT rolled, and there were ongoing negotiations with the man. He eventually “pointed the firearm at officers, which resulted in officers discharging their handguns and an AR-15 patrol rifle.” It turned out that the decedent had “kidnapped, physically assaulted, and attempted to carjack a victim prior to officers arriving on (the) scene.” (LBPD)
- On Sunday afternoon, around 4:30 p.m., the LBFD were called to the Koch Processing Plant at the port. There was a “collapsed tube, trapping and injuring three workers.” Two people were sent to hospitals. (LBFD)
- A shoutout to small business owner Carolyn Kirkpatrick and her family members! By participating in the Caltrans Adopt-A-Highway program, they have been taking responsibility for the stretch of the northbound 710 between Wardlow and Del Amo. “I don’t think people realize how much trash is on the highway,” she said. (LB Post)
- Mark your calendars! Saturday, Belmont Shore will celebrate the first Sea Change Festival. It runs from noon to 4 p.m. “Sea Change is about bringing awareness to all the things you can do on a daily basis to help improve the environment,” the organizer said. There will be a beach cleanup, Jonny Tarr will provide the tunes and professional sandcastle builders will wow attendees with their artistry. (Daily Bulletin)
