🤔 Aggressive Urban Coyotes or Regular L.A. County Wildlife? Poll!
We live with raccoons and opossums. Do coyotes fall into the same category? They don’t need open space, have no problems building dens close to humans, and are becoming more and more visible on our neighborhood streets. What do you think? So far, 60.7% think we need to learn to live with them, 35.7% want them gone, and 3.6% don’t care one way or the other.
📰 Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
1) Were you caught up in the traffic jam on the southbound 710 Friday morning? Around 6 a.m., a big rig became involved in an accident that left it on its side “on the Pacific Coast Highway off-ramp from the southbound 710.” The driver was rescued. At this time, it’s not clear how the accident happened in the first place. (Long Beach Post)
2) On Friday morning, just after 4 a.m., the LBPD was called to the 5500 block of Atlantic Avenue. There, they found a woman with a gunshot wound. She was taken to the hospital and officers are investigating. (LBPD)
3) What’s happening on the Millikan football team? We learned on Thursday that the Millikan Rams “are forfeiting their four wins so far this season due to use of an ineligible player.” In addition, Angel Molina will take over as interim head coach. (The562.org)
4) Is there a lack of equity for schools with special education students inside the LBUSD? On Wednesday, the Board of Education met, and the recent heatwave was a topic of discussion. A Poly HS teacher “said multiple students had seizures at the campus during the first two weeks of class” The same teacher revealed that “two LBUSD schools that exclusively serve special ed students were among the last in line to get HVAC upgrades.” A Patrick Elementary School parent wanted to know “how long the rollout of Measure E funds was taking; the bond measure was approved in 2016.” “Because there was no item on the board’s agenda about the heat, trustees did not discuss the issue.” (Long Beach Post)
5) Mark your calendars! You have until October 16 to view the City’s Draft Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan and comment on it. You can look at the plan online or see it at any library. “Earlier this year, community members had the opportunity to share their knowledge of local hazards and emergency preparedness for disasters via a public survey. The information provided through the survey was used during the development of the draft plan.” (City of LB)
