Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:

  1. On July 23, there was a ribbon cutting that welcomed Anna’s to the corner of Pine Avenue and 5th Street. It serves “small plates, wine and low-cost beers, which are currently selling for between $2 and $4 a pint.” Pine has seen plenty of business closures and needs incoming companies to believe in the location. (Long Beach Post)
  2. On February 2, the LBPD was called to the scene of a deadly shooting “near Atlantic Avenue and Esther Street.” A 31-year-old man was shot while sitting in his car. On March 9, they identified a 20-year-old suspect who was already in custody. On June 1, a 19-year-old suspect was arrested “near the area of 5th Street and Long Beach Boulevard.” Finally, the LBPD announced on Friday that they had arrested “a 19-year-old resident of Las Vegas” as a suspect in the case. He was “near the area of Wardlow Road and Pacific Avenue.” (LBPD)
  3. Beware of rental scams! We learned on Friday that a listing on Esperanza Avenue, which was advertised on Craigslist, didn’t actually exist. A prospective tenant “signed a lease and wired $3,200 for the deposit and first month's rent before touring the place.” The consumer has since alerted his bank and the LBPD. However, “the condominium listing is still up on Craigslist.” (ABC)
  4. The Long Beach State women’s soccer team announced last week that “Tianna Sidtikun, Taylor Freitas, and Kainani Kia’aina will join the Beach this fall.” They join “Cherrie Cox, Felicia Jastré Högberg, Julia Moore, Litzy Morales, and Kana Uchida,” who had signed National Letters of Intent. (Soccer Wire, 2)
  5. Mark your calendars! On August 2 is National Night Out. It is an opportunity to step outside and meet friends, neighbors, and police officers. Various LB neighborhoods have big plans. The Deforest Park Neighborhood Association plans two events in North LB; there’ll be a Taco Tuesday at the Historic Long Beach Dairy and Creamery, while food trucks are lining up “on 60th Street and Atlantic Avenue.” (Press-Telegram)
