New Year’s Resolutions Poll! 🎶
According to Forbes, only 8% of people making New Year’s resolutions actually achieve them. Even so, the experts suggest making resolutions because they encourage intentionality, optimism, and a positive effect on others. So, what are your resolutions for 2023? So far, 40% intend to meet new people or interact more with current friends. Another 20% each plan to travel or experience something new; live healthier, while the other group wants to embrace change.

📰 Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. A 12-inch waterline break at Atlantic Avenue and Bixby Road on Friday wreaked havoc for drivers and pedestrians alike. The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) closed down the intersection at around 11 a.m. and asked everyone to avoid the area. The Water Department noted that its crews shut off the water; however, “all customers in the area WILL have water service during repairs. No customer shutoffs (are) expected.” At this time, we don’t have information on what caused the break. (Patch, Long Beach Water)
  2. Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) classified (non-teacher) workers got a new contract on Wednesday. It “includes a 4.5% raise as well as a 2.5% bonus, among other items” for members of the California School Employees Association’s Long Beach chapter. This agreement came after two years of drama, a change in union leadership, and overall frustration. (Long Beach Post)
  3. Participate in an Inauguration Service Day today, Saturday, Dec. 17! The City announced on Wednesday that “residents are encouraged to give back to their local neighborhoods” to “welcome Mayor-Elect Rex Richardson and the new and reinstated Councilmembers for the City of Long Beach.” Organized activities include a holiday toy collection at the Long Beach Rescue Mission at 1430 Pacific Avenue between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., a beach cleanup at Granada Beach at 5100 East Ocean Boulevard from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., or a Willow Springs Park cleanup at 2745 Orange Avenue from 10 a.m to 12 p.m. (City of Long Beach)
  4. Community members are taking a proactive approach to violence against Cambodians. “As long as you look Asian, you are someone they might attack,” Pacific Asian Counseling Services explains. And they’re not taking it lying down. Workshops on February 4, 11, and 18 teach Cambodian elders “how to report a hate crime or a hate incident” and how to defend themselves if physically attacked. Sign up for the workshops that will be held at the Salvation Army Center located at 3060 Long Beach Boulevard. (Signal Hill Tribune)
  5. A huge shoutout to the Chunkz & Tubz Rescue Foundation, which became an official non-profit bulldog rescue in August. Friday’s report highlights that the group saves bulldogs listed as “rescue only” from shelters, where the animals may well be euthanized due to health issues caused by improper breeding. Find out what the group is all about by attending a bulldog meetup today, Saturday, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at El Dorado Park. (Press-Telegram)
