LONG BEACH, CA — Authorities have identified a woman killed in a violent crash on the Artesia (91) Freeway near Long Beach Monday night.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office identified the woman as 46-year-old Pico Rivera resident Laura Sanchez Ruiz. Her cause of death was listed as multiple blunt force injuries.

The California Highway Patrol says Ruiz was driving a Scion XD on the freeway, just east of Cherry Avenue, around 10:29 p.m. Monday, when it suddenly caught fire and became disabled.

Ruiz got out of her vehicle, and that's when a driver in a Toyota Camry, while trying to avoid a crash, unsuccessfully swerved and sideswiped the Scion XD, the CHP said.

The Scion XD hit Ruiz and launched her into the westbound lanes of traffic, where the CHP says an unknown number of cars hit her. She died at the scene.
