📢 Fireworks Poll!
Fireworks are illegal in Long Beach. If the police are called, you may have to pay as much as $20,000 in response costs plus citation fines of $1,000. How do you feel about that? Please let me know your thoughts! (As of today, 13.2% don’t want fireworks, 75.9% want “safe and sane fireworks,” and 0.5% don’t care one way or the other while another 10.3% want to buy what they choose.)
Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:
- If you live in Naples or Belmont Shore, you may have been among the 3,000 residents who lost power on Wednesday morning at around 3:52 a.m. “Long Beach fire reported three calls of wires arcing just after 4 a.m., and a few calls of minor fires,” which came on the heels of the overnight thunder and lightning storm in the area. (LB Post)
- Would you believe that there are still ballots being counted? The run for council district one (CD1) is getting to be a nail biter. It looked like incumbent Mary Zendejas had it in the bag, but now, she “is about 14 votes over the 50% mark” to avoid a runoff against Mariela Salgado. In CD9, Joni Ricks-Oddie is 29 votes short of the 50% mark, which would prevent the runoff against Ginny Gonzales. The next vote update should come out on Friday. (LB Post)
- It is time for the annual Equality Plaza Nomination. Do you know someone whose life exemplifies what Harvey Milk stood for? You can make your nomination by July 15. “Potential nominees may be living or deceased and must have or had identified as LGBTQ.” (Harvey Milk Promenade Committee)
- The Long Beach Municipal Band is opening its 113th season on Tuesday at Whaley Park with “a salute to American freedom through music.” You can catch the band’s “United We Stand” concerts on Wednesday at Los Cerritos Park, Thursday at Marine Stadium and Friday at El Dorado Park West. Its next collection of favorites begins on July 5 with Broadway music. (City of LB)
- Mark your calendars! Sunday is the Puerto Rican Festival, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Dia de San Juan Festival at the Rainbow Lagoon Park. It runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and there are tickets to buy. Bring your ice chest, chairs and small beach umbrellas! (Fiestalegre)
