Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:
- We learned on Monday that the Department of Alcohol Beverage Control has pulled the Bottoms Up Tavern’s liquor license. Located at 1739 East Artesia Boulevard, “investigators say the bar was involved in illegal drug sales” and there was the March car crash that killed two. The alleged driver reportedly “had just left the bar.” However, the business has already decided to move and it will open next at 9875 Alondra Boulevard in Bellflower. In a July 15 message to patrons, the ownership team takes to task City Councilman Rex Richardson of District 9 and the Hamilton Neighborhood Association for treating the bar as a scapegoat. (ABC, Bottoms Up Tavern)
- If you are using the bus for Route 71, you will see some stop changes today. “Due to a road closure, LBT will have a detour for bus stops on Route 71” between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Affected stops are on Orange Avenue Between Wardlow and Spring. (LB Transit)
- The LBPD announced promotions! Long Beach Police Chief Wally Hebeish is promoting Lieutenant Mike Solomita, Lieutenant Scott Jenson, Lieutenant Stephanie Hall, and Lieutenant Greg Brown to the rank of Commander. These promotions are effective August 13. Congratulations! (OC Breeze)
- The Magnolia at 500 West Broadway opened Thursday. It offers 142 apartments and several business locations on the first floor. “Rent at The Magnolia will range from $2,345 to $4,575 per month, depending on the size of the apartment.” The leasing office opened on Friday. (Press-Telegram)
- Mark your calendars! KCRW is planning a Labor Day weekend party at Lincoln Park. Festivities begin at 6 p.m. on September 4 featuring DJs Wyldeflower and Valida. “Come early to explore Long Beach Walls murals in the making and the sculptures of Art Renzei before you come dance.” (KCRW)
