Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:
- The LBPD investigated a non-fatal stabbing that was reported on Tuesday. Taking place at around 7:30 p.m., it sent officers “to the area of Anaheim Street and Cherry Avenue.” There, they met a 15-year-old boy who said “he was stabbed in the upper body earlier in the week on Aug. 1 at approximately noon near the 2600 block of East Spaulding Street.” A verbal altercation had turned violent. (LBPD)
- We learned on Thursday that, so far this year, the LBPD has “reported 27 traffic collision deaths,” of whom 14 were pedestrians. The latest victim is a woman who died after being struck after 10 p.m. by a 2005 Dodge Durango on Saturday while crossing PCH “outside a crosswalk.” The driver remained on the scene, and “investigators do not believe speeding, alcohol, drugs or distracted driving were factors in the crash.” (LB Post)
- The Aquarium of the Pacific is home to a new sea otter pup! We learned on Wednesday that staff took in a “sea otter pup that was abandoned by his mother in the Carmel-by-the-Sea area.” When the look for a surrogate mom at the Monterey Bay Aquarium failed, the four-month-old pup was taken to Long Beach, “where he was paired with an adult sea otter named Chloe, so he could acclimate to his new home.” You can visit the new pup and, if you donate $100, suggest a name. (Spectrum News 1)
- The former Liberation Brewing Company location at 3630 Atlantic Avenue in Bixby Knolls did not remain shuttered for long. Beachwood Brewing & Distilling is throwing open the doors today. It will start out as a “24-tap tasting room for its beers.” The long-term plan, going into next year, is the acquisition of a distilling license that would allow the business to make “vodkas, gins and rums.” (LB Business Journal)
- Mark your calendars! From today through December, you have the opportunity to visit a 14-piece art exhibit at the Long Beach Airport! Put up by Able ARTS Works, the exhibit “is a collection made by local artists of all abilities, as well as resident artists.” “This exhibit is a great addition to our airport and an amazing way to showcase the incredible work of Long Beach artists — especially artists with disabilities, said Mayor Robert Garcia.” (LB Local News)
