💧 Water Crisis Poll! 💧
Residents are limited to watering their landscapes two days per week, before 9 a.m. or after 4 p.m. What else should the City do to deal with the water crisis? Please let me know your thoughts! So far, 17% want to mandate drought-resistant landscaping, 19% want to recycle wastewater for irrigation, another 43% want to build a desalination plant at the coast, and 21% don’t believe residential water use contributes to the water crisis.
Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:
- The Long Beach Creative Group’s gallery is hosting ‘In Memoriam,’ which is the rare opportunity to see and bid on “works from late educators and artists from Long Beach’s colleges.” Visit the gallery at 2221 East Broadway between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Participate in a silent auction that ends on Saturday at 3 p.m. Ten percent of the profits “benefit Long Beach not-for-profit Able ARTS Work (AAW), whose mission is to provide creative art activities and resources for people of all ages and abilities in the city.” (Signal Tribune)
- Opposition to AB5 continues. On Wednesday, truckers organized convoys and protested “against a California law that could limit the use of independent contractors.” Truckers blocked traffic at an LB Port entrance and slowed down traffic on nearby freeways. (KTLA)
- The liquor store operator, who gave a 20-year-old a bottle of whiskey despite knowing he was underage, pleaded guilty on Wednesday “to a misdemeanor count of furnishing alcohol to a minor.” The young man would later kill three people during a DUI crash. The clerk “was banned from ever holding a liquor license or participating in any business or other commercial activity involving the sale or distribution of alcoholic beverages in California, along with being sentenced to 364 days in custody, five years on probation, and 720 hours of community service.” (Fox)
- When Shoreline Gateway celebrated its grand opening in March, Mayor Robert Garcia called it “a symbol of our progress and future.” On Wednesday, we learned that the developers of the city’s tallest building are named as defendants in a $3 million lawsuit brought by a construction company that alleges “dishonest business practices.” (The Real Deal)
- Mark your calendars! There are several neighborhood cleanups coming up. Saturday is the College Square Neighborhood Association-sponsored cleanup at 186 West 67th Way. On July 23, there are two cleanups, one in the AOC7 area and one in the Wesca Zaferia neighborhood. (LB Public Works)
